Bonaparte Pottery Factory |
The Bonaparte Pottery Factory, now referred to as the Pottery Barn, represents a relatively rare example of surviving fachwerk in which heavy timber structures and brick infill are clearly expressed. Inside the building an extraordinary system of heavy timber posts and trusses suspend portions of the first and second floors from the roof, permitting a broad unencumbered interior work space for donkey driven pugmill operations. Archeological investigations conducted by the University of Iowa in association with Prairie Architects uncovered evidence allowing this interpretation of the manufacturing process. Damages sustained during the flooding of the summer of 1993 resulted in substantial damages to the foundations and underpinnings, as well as masonry instability. Work included assessment of the extent damages, recommendations for extent and sequencing of repairs, and Statement of Probable Cost, followed by a detailed assessment of existing conditions and the preparation of construction documentation suitable for use by contractors. All work was performed in close coordination with the National Trust for Historic Preservation Flood Response Program and the State Historic Society of Iowa (1994-1995). |
