Donation Made to Jefferson County Historic Preservation Commission Fairfield, Iowa -- Gladys Crandall, before selling the property at 113 East Broadway Avenue, gave a rare Louden Overhead Auto Hoist to the Jefferson County Historic Preservation Commission. The hoist was fabricated by the Louden Machinery Company in Fairfield, and was installed in the building in the 1920's when it was used as an automobile repair shop. The hoist was photographed and removed for storage. Future deposition of the hoist is unknown, but the Commission has expressed the desire to have it reinstalled in an appropriate period building capable of presenting and interpreting the significance of the artifact. The Louden Machinery Company is credited with the invention and production of the world's first industrial overhead carrier systems. Originally used in hay and dairy operations, later versions such as this one were adopted to heavy industry. Larger examples were utilized by NASA and Boeing in the production of aircraft in the 1960's. |
