American Gothic House Visitor's Welcome Center Eldon, Iowa |
American Gothic House Visitor's Welcome Center Eldon, Iowa Architecture and Site Development Design Grant Wood's painting "American Gothic" tells the story of Midwestern life and culture through the use of many traditional symbols: the rick-rack on the woman's apron, the Gothic window, the pitchfork held in the tight fist of the somber farmer. By glorifying and satirizing rural Americans, the painting remains in the running for the most parodied and recognized work of art in America. Painted in front of this National Register property in Eldon, Iowa, the site is visited regularly by travelers wanting their picture snapped in front of this famous facade. Perennial public visits to the site suggest a unique opportunity for the community to directly enhance the quality of those visits and to offer extended visitor services that will benefit both the community of Eldon and the State of Iowa. Funding for the project was provided through the combined efforts of Vision Iowa Program, the Iowa Department of Transportation's Transportation Enhancement Act for the Twenty-First Century, Wapello County Board of Supervisors, City of Eldon, and private donors. Project Team consists of French-Reneker Associates, Inc, and Prairie Architects, Inc. |
