Grand Army of the Republic Lodge Redfield, Iowa |
Provided by owner: Exterior Wood Stair Reconstruction-- Open exterior stairs will provide limited public access to the second floor Gar Lodge Meeting Room. Originally a single run, the reconstruction will provide a mid-height landing to improve safety for users. Remote video access will be provided for disabled persons, with viewing from the first floor kiosk. South Porch Reconstruction -- Based on evidence contained in historic photos, the front porch will provide shaded entry and an upper level viewing stand (the adjacent street was originally a parade route). The addition will extend beyond the present sidewalk and curb line approximately 10-feet, with associated landscaping and street treatments. Entry onto the porch will be via a new flush sidewalk on the west and concrete steps on the east, placed in line with the flow of sidewalk traffic. Concrete planters will be provided at the edge of the porch to protect the structure from street traffic. Exterior Wood Deck -- An exterior wood deck will be provided on the north side of the GAR Lodge to provide gathering and staging space for visiting groups. Accessed from the existing neighboring ally, the porch will contain seating and entry to the Lodge through the back door. The porch is not original to the building. Public Toilet -- Based on the design of old outhouses, this modern toilet facility will provide services for visitors. Currently there are no restrooms at the site. This is an alternate project, and will be built as funds allow. Subterannean and surface drainage systems will be provided. Provided by Joe Smith Properties, neighboring property owner: The brick building located to the west of the GAR Lodge is currently used as a restaurant, with a beer garden reached by the alley adjacent to the Lodge. The owner has agreed to repave this alley to provide flush access onto the new rear wood deck. He will also provide new planters to match those at the front viewing porch. |
