Bandshell Restoration

Interior Work

1. The unfinished storage area beneath the stage presently has a dirt floor that exacerbates the
condensation problem. Proposed work includes excavation of the dirt floor to a level approximately
24-inches below the present finish elevation, permitting installation of a new concrete slab floor
construction.

2. Original interior concrete floor slabs shall be removed from the greenrooms and lower level entry foyer,
permitting compaction of base, installation of vapor and thermal protection systems, and replacement of
reinforced concrete slab construction with appropriate expansion controls.

3. Replace existing partitions with galvanized stud framing, finished with painted gypsum wallboard. Paint
finishes will be lightly textured to replicate original plaster.

4. Insulation and vapor barrier shall be applied to all interior wall and ceiling surfaces with moisture
resistant gypsum wallboard finish. Interior ceiling cavities between beams at the space under the stage will
be insulated with a combination of rigid polystyrene and fiber batt blanket insulation. Textured paint
finishes shall approximate the appearance of the original plaster finishes. Returns at door and window
openings will wrap corners without supplemental trim, similar to existing plaster finish.

5. Existing non-historic doors shall be removed and replaced.

6. Lower level millwork items, including two early but non-original makeup tables with mirror frames, toilet
partitions, and similar items will be removed, stored, and reinstalled where possible. Toilet partitions will
be removed from the two toilet rooms, but the entry doors and frames may be reinstalled flush with the
toilet room wall surface as decorative elements recalling the original special character and function.
Miscellaneous hardware and fittings, such as original soap holders, etc., will be reinstalled after completion
of new interior finishes.

7. The original building was not conditioned, and provided only natural ventilation at the lower level. The
renovation program calls for installation of mechanical heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning at the
lower level of the Bandshell. Distribution ducts will be located predominantly within the storage room
beneath the stage. Condenser units will be site mounted adjacent to the Bandshell. Roof mounted fans will
be located discretely behind the roof parapet.

8. Original wiring and fixtures will be replaced with new construction. Interior lighting fixtures are simple,
non-character defining elements. The only exterior lighting consists of open cans mounted behind the lip of
the bandshell, arching over the stage. These lights will be refurbished where possible, though
contemporary performance lighting fixtures of this type are of similar design.

9. Audio, video, and lighting equipment will be totally replaced with contemporary technologies, with
buried raceways and other infrastructure provided for large performances where supplemental equipment
will be added to support performance requirements.
