Bandshell Restoration

Exterior Work

In order to minimize the passage of moisture into the bandshell construction, a subterranean cementitious
dampproofing membrane will be applied to the exterior surface of the foundation.

Excavation of the full perimeter of the bandshell will permit installation of a groundwater interceptor
system, consisting of perimeter drain piping and porous fill materials, for the purpose of relieving any
hydrostatic pressure that may be exerted against the foundation walls. Solid pipe outfall will be trenched to
the face of the hillside to the south, with open drainage to light.

Surface drains will be installed at critical locations to intercept surface water that would otherwise be
directed toward the bandshell.

The pair of roof drains at the rear of the bandshell will be redirected from the existing flow into the sanitary
sewer main to the perimeter footing drain collector piping.

Paint finishes will be removed from the entire cast-in-place concrete exterior of the bandshell.

Two major classes of deterioration will be addressed by the repair program:

...........1. The rear parapet wall will be partially reconstructed with formed cast-in-place concrete to match
................the original wall profile and materials.

............2. Cracking, principally located in the stage deck due to the absence of expansion and contraction
................
controls. We propose an approach that places a weather tight membrane over the cracked deck,
...............providing a durable walking surface and permitting the continued movement of the crack system
................
under the membrane.

Exterior concrete walls, shell, and all exposed surfaces shall receive a cementitious acrylic emulsion
protective coating and waterproof barrier; vapor permeable, lightly textured, white color. Material is similar
in appearance to existing painted surface, but provides greater longevity and is not susceptible to the
typical moisture related mechanisms of deterioration that lead to the premature failure of painted finishes.
Historically, this structure has been repainted on a 3 to 4 year cycle.

Roofing systems shall be installed over the top of the existing Green Room at the Bandshell. System
includes rigid extruded polystyrene insulation, and an EPDM rubber roof membrane in white.

Original windows shall be removed, sandblasted, and deteriorated sections repaired with epoxy. They shall
then by repainted and reinstalled with the sash secured in the closed position. Infill panels shall be
installed at the interior to provide thermal insulation and privacy.

We propose to remove the concrete cap from the pool retaining wall, restoring the original view of the
pool. We will also return the lighting, fountain, and scupper systems to full operation. To address the safety
issues associated with having an open pool, we propose to restore the pool to a depth of 6-inches
(originally it was 3-feet deep), filling the pool each time there is a concert or other event, and draining it
following the performance.

Exterior lighting will be provided to highlight the Bandshell at night in two ways:

.............1. Bright and with sharp contrasts during performances.

.............2. Soft and apparitional for non-performance nighttime lighting.
