American Gothic House Visitor's Welcome Center Eldon, Iowa |
We concluded that the existing approach is problematic for the first-time visitor. Alignment of the approach path along the same visual axis depicted in the painting should meet the primary expectations set by the painting. Focusing the approaching view on the house using secondary site elements, such as linear tree elements and screening of competing visual elements, should strengthen the impression made by the famous facade. Amplifying the connection between the house and the painting, placement of reminder images of the painting itself at strategic points along the path should result in higher recognition and a stronger impression that the house is in fact the one in the painting. The new road will cross into the field south of the Water Treatment Plant and approach the house frontally, lining up the visitor for the same viewing angle used in the painting. |
