registration in Massachusetts, Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois.
Licensure is available in other states through our
association with the National Council of Architectural
Registration Boards.

Cooper Whiteside Norman, AIA
Principal Architects

Cooper Whiteside Norman founded Prairie Architects in 1989 after moving
to Fairfield, Iowa from Boston, Massachusetts, where he had been in
architectural practice since 1976.

Mr. Norman studied architecture at the University of Virginia and the Boston
Architectural Center School of Architecture, where he was the highest
ranked member of his graduating class.

He was awarded the AIA Medal for Excellence in Architecture by the
American Institute of Architects in 1981.




Mr. Norman also holds a Masters Degree in Business Administration from Northeastern University and a
Bachelor's Degree in Sociology and Anthropology from the University of Virginia.

Mr. Norman is registered to practice architecture in Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Massachusetts, and is a
member of the American Institute of Architects and the National Council of Architectural Registration
Boards. Registration in other jurisdictions is possible through the established NCARB reciprocity
arrangement.

* Prior to completing his architectural studies, Mr. Norman devoted an intervening five-year period to work

directly in the building trades, gaining hands-on experience and direct understanding of the challenges--
--
faced by the craftsmen who ultimately build. He also worked in construction project management, taking
--
responsibility for cost estimating, project scheduling,
--and contract administration.

* Over a thirty year period, Mr. Norman has taken the lead for projects with an aggre
--gate construction value in excess of $100 million. He has worked for public and private clients on--
--
institutional, commercial, residential, and industrial projects and has been responsible for preservation--
--
and restoration planning on many of the nation's most significant heritage properties.

* The Federal Emergency Management Agency selected Mr. Norman to serve as Historic Preservation

--
Specialist to the Special Presidential Commission for the Future of Princeville, North Carolina (2000),
--
historic site of the nation's first black municipality.

Mr. Norman is active in promoting education and higher standards in the field of historic preservation, both
at the State and National levels. He is the past-president of the
Iowa Historic Preservation Alliance,
designated by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as the official statewide preservation
organization for Iowa.

Mr. Norman serves on the
Terrace Hill Commission, the governing board for the buildings and grounds of
the Iowa Governor's Mansion.

He has spoken before the Association for Preservation Technologies (APT) conferences in Ottawa, Canada
and Seattle, Washington. State conferences have included presentations at the Historic Society of Iowa's
annual EXPO, and local conferences in Amana Colonies, Burlington, Keokuk, Mason City, and other
venues.
